Dear federalists, so where exactly will the invasion come from ?

José Goulão

Yes, dear federalists, fervent Atlanticists, the actor closest to attacking European Union territory is your beloved American ally.

Mrs von der Leyen instructs us to arm ourselves to the teeth, even if public healthcare is allowed to rot and public education to collapse. NATO, for its part, has decided that our roads and bridges must be rebuilt at our expense so that Alliance tanks may roll across them on their way to a war with Russia - a war taken as inevitable, even if it needs to be carefully provoked.

The admiral who once dreamed of becoming President of the Republic, and who never hesitates to expound NATO's terrorist doctrine as a national duty, calmly condemns young Portuguese men and women to die for Zelensky's fascist Ukraine, all so that we may avoid being invaded by Putin's monsters. António Costa, meanwhile, promises Zelensky whatever he can and whatever he cannot, convinced that his elevation to President of the European Council has finally released his inner strongman - also in response to the Russians' supposed obsession with what is "ours" and their alleged yearning to lounge amid the comforts of "our civilisation".

Each morning, we are expected to wake up and look eastwards, or at least prick up our ears in that direction, to check whether barbarian hordes have already crossed the frontier from Vilar Formoso to Elvas.

And yet, suddenly, it appears that instead of preparing to march east we should turn north, driven by the urgency of defending Greenland - that immense ice-covered landmass, rich in resources and strategically placed at the gateway to the Arctic, the latest geopolitical fashion.

Have the Russians changed their minds ? Has Putin decided to outflank NATO and the European Union simultaneously by entering through the north?

Apparently not. The monster in Moscow remains busy methodically destroying Western Ukraine's energy infrastructure, testing Oreshniks and Kalibr missiles that make short work of Patriot systems, the pride of NATO's air defence. There is no indication that Greenland is on his agenda.

And when Putin eventually does take an interest - should he decide that the Danish-administered island is another Crimea - he will certainly be too late. Donald Trump, militant pacifist and indirect Nobel Peace Prize laureate thanks to the generosity and selflessness of the fascist Corina, has already moved ahead and has the imperial Stars and Stripes ready to be raised over what would become the 51st state of the Union.

With friends like these...

Yes, dear federalists, fervent Atlanticists, the actor closest to attacking European Union territory is your beloved American ally. While Washington busied itself reintegrating Venezuela into the backyard of the Americas - kidnapping its legitimate president because, after all, the ecological world still runs on oil - you did not object. When the United States attempted, and for now abandoned, an attack on Iran hand in hand with its humanitarian Zionist partners, you raised no concerns. Democracy, after all, must be restored wherever it challenges the so-called rules-based international order.

But now the imperial eagle, ridden by the intrepid Trump, spreads its wings to sink its claws into Greenland. That is to say, NATO's boss has decided to appropriate a piece of NATO itself - and of the European Union, no less - a territory belonging to one of the nations most prone to crawling before Uncle Sam, Portugal included.

The issue ebbs and flows with the mercurial mind of Donald Trump, but the outcome seems inevitable: the President of the United States will not relinquish control over Greenland. Whether via Denmark, through negotiation, or by force of arms, such an outcome will represent yet another humiliation for the European Union. At the same time, NATO's façade as an "alliance" will crumble further, revealing what it has always been: a poorly tailored disguise for America's military colonisation of Europe.

Some even foresee that a US military action against Greenland would mark the end of NATO. Before reaching that point - should American aggression indeed occur - it would be necessary to assess how "united" Europe would respond. Which countries would bravely confront the military contingents whose legendary victories are celebrated in Hollywood films and fairy tales masquerading as Western history ? And which would carry on with their lives, whistling innocently, since the fate of a vast frozen rock in the far north is really none of their concern?

At that stage, we would not merely be witnessing the unmasking of NATO, but also the slow death of that grand fiction known as European integration - an obvious impossibility for anyone who understands European history without sophistry.

It has become customary, because it is uncomfortable to examine one's conscience, to claim that all of this is the result of Donald Trump's obvious insanity rather than of the United States itself as an imperial and colonising nation. But pretending otherwise is hardly intelligent, dear federalists, dear Atlanticists.

This is the very essence of American development, particularly since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the Soviet Union - the moment when the world was supposedly entering paradise - and also as a consequence of the creation of that totalitarian instrument known as the "rules-based international order", whose rules mutate according to the moods and interests of Washington's domination.

The United States has openly been an imperial nation since at least the end of the Second World War. And Western governments - more De Gaulle or less De Gaulle, more 1950s or less 1980s - have consistently offered their vassalage to this supposed beacon of democracy, especially in the face of the ever-terrifying threat from the East.

That vassalage continued and deepened under the harmonious chorus of the rules-based order, and so European armies obediently followed American "liberators" into Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya - where, according to the official American narrative, European soldiers cowardly failed to die in sufficient numbers.

If Trump's madness unsettles many, Joe Biden's was received with indulgence, despite having created - with or without Obama, that specialist in remote executions - the human quagmires of Ukraine and Syria, while further deepening the tragedy of Palestine.

It is the United States of America that threatens Greenland and humiliates NATO and the European Union - now through Trump. Dear federalists, dear Atlanticists, review the wars, coups and massacres carried out across four continents since Korea, long before Trump wielded any power. At the time, he merely embodied the American Dream: a mega-businessman who built an immeasurable real-estate and financial empire thanks solely to talent and the serene mechanisms of "free opportunity".

The President of the United States, as Eisenhower warned, serves the military-industrial complex according to the needs of imperial capitalism. Trump is not an aberration. He is simply another president in service of a system that the West, without amendment, embraces as globalist.

Forgive the repetition, esteemed federalists and Atlanticists, but you only awoke to this reality - of which you are accomplices - when it knocked at your door in Greenland. You saw nothing troubling when Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria or Palestine bled. Nothing when coups were staged in Latin America, when dictators were cherished, when repression was sponsored. This, too, is America - much of it before Trump was born.

So no, Trump's election is not misunderstanding. He was elected, defeated and elected again. As the Portuguese saying goes, anyone can fall the first time; the second time, only those who wish to do so.

With friends like these, who repay loyalty with home invasion, there is little point in complaining about enemies.
