Gilbert Doctorow and John Helmer are two observers of Russia who often do not agree. But in the past day or two both have raised the same question. Doctorow asks if Putin is on the ropes in the forthcoming September election and facing the possible defeat of his governing party, United Russia?
Helmer asks: "Does Putin understand he is discrediting himself with Russian voters as the national parliamentary election campaign gets under way?"

It would appear that President Trump in his hubris to be the world's greatest and unbeatable emperor has crossed the legendary Rubicon, a reference to Julius Caesar crossing the Rubicon River in 49 BC, defying the Roman Senate and starting a civil war. Crossing the Rubicon was a decision of no return.

A country unwilling to defend itself is a country that will not live.

If a country cannot defend itself from external attacks and will not defend its own internal culture, then that country won't long last. This isn't a controversial point, is it ? Nations survive when they are capable of securing their borders from invaders who wish to conquer them.

Laws aimed at pro-Palestine protests should always be looked at as efforts to ban criticism of Israel. That's what we're seeing in the UK as the prime minister encourages the prosecution of anyone who says "globalise the intifada".
"If you stand alongside people who say globalise the intifada, you are calling for terrorism against Jews and people who use that phrase should be prosecuted," said Keir Starmer during a Thursday press conference.

Last week, Peter joined Mark on Resource Talks to walk through how higher energy prices, central-bank policy, and market psychology are shaping the next few years. He argues oil is likely to remain elevated even if a war ends, warns that inflation is driven by monetary responses rather than commodity shocks alone, and urges investors to move out of dollars and Treasuries into gold as a hedge.

The stalemate in the war on Iran continues. The Strait of Hormuz is (mostly) still closed. The U.S. blockade of Iran related sea traffic, though leaky, is still in force.
Iran is evaluating the war as being far from over:
Overall, the perception in Iran is that the war is far from over; rather, the naval blockade is seen either as a prelude to further escalation or as a trigger that could bring about a new round of conflict sooner rather than later.

The South China Sea - scattered reefs, shipping lanes, and artificial islands now hosting runways and radar.
In Washington this year, a senior U.S. Marine Corps general stood in front of an audience of defense professionals and said something that quietly marked a turning point in how the Pentagon speaks about China.

Mali: a new front in the Western war on multipolarism
The firm defense of Mali this week indicates that Western intrigue will fail.
An audacious coup attempt against the government in the West African state of Mali appears to have been thwarted by the Malian Armed Forces, supported by their Russian allies.
The surprise coup was launched last weekend when an estimated 12,000 fighters attacked at least five cities, including the capital, Bamako.
